Why should you have the cylinder head skimmed?
A cylinder head should be refaced as a matter of procedure when replacing a head gasket, not only does it give a good, clean finish to install the new head gasket but it will also identify any localised distortion, twisting or high spots within the head itself while on the machine bed. We remove as little material as possibly to obtain a smooth, flat surface.
Equally important, with the new M.L.S. (Multi Layer Steel) head gaskets found in most modern vehicles they have less chance of complying with distortions within the head than the older composite head gaskets.
Some head gaskets are available in various thicknesses to restore the compression ratio that is increased by skimming.
Below is a picture of a customer`s cylinder head on the machine bed halfway throught the skimming process. The customer chose not to get the cylinder head skimmed prior to fitting a new head gasket.........the vehicle never even got off the driveway once it was rebuilt.

It is quite clear to see distortion, newly machined surfaces at both ends while the fire-ring marks on chambers 1, 2 and 3 are still visible.
Message is quite simple.......Not getting the cylinder head skimmed is a false economy.
